History
Typically, approximately 60% or more of a homeowner's utility costs are associated with heating and cooling. The recent surge in fossil fuel costs led Phil Wheeler, who heats his home with oil, to explore energy alternatives that would be more cost effective and efficient. After considerable research, Phil decided to install a geothermal heat pump system at his home. He quickly found various small companies or individuals that could design the heat pump system and contractors that could install a portion of the system. Unfortunately, Phil could not find one company that could do it all. His frustration got him thinking that it made sense for people to want "one-stop shopping", i.e., a turnkey operation that could both design and install a system. He also came to realize that this technology could, in the right application, be a great fit for other homes and businesses. Since Phil, a civil engineer by training, could not find such a company that offered this turnkey service, he brought his idea to Rich Cushing, an engineer; and Joe Jammallo, a geologist, both of whom he was already in business with, and together they formed East Coast Geothermal, LLC. Coincidentally, Phil now heats and cools his home with two geothermal heat pumps.
